There has been considerable concern at the significant fall in  the numbers of District Nurses. Partly as  a result of pressure from the nursing profession they DH published a  'new vision and

service model'  for district nursing. This  was

developed by a partnership of the Department of

Health, NHS Commissioning Board

Authority, The Queen’s Nursing Institute, and with

the  District Nurse leaders and practitioners. Its

intention was to set out the foundations of

district nursing services. Yet with much of this

strategy  'value and practice  based' there was

no mention of  tackling the continuing decline in

staff numbers.

So while there would be little argument with

the broad values and vision expressed in the

document , the McKinnsey Report still seemed to

hold  sway, particularly  in regard to shifting care into 'more costs effective settings' and 'increasing the productivity of District Nurses'.

So the lack of commitment to increasing staffing is no surprise as DN staff numbers continued to decline during 2012. New routine Nurse level Hospital and Community Services Staffing Figures  show  District Nursing numbers continuing to decline.
